Samir Aich, born in 1956, is a prominent contemporary Indian artist based in Kolkata. He graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft in 1978 and has since been actively exhibiting his work in major cities across India. Known for his bold experimentation, Aich’s practice spans painting, sculpture, and installations, each reflecting his spontaneous and emotionally charged creative process.
Over the years, Aich has transitioned from neo-realist beginnings to semi-abstract figurative art, all the while maintaining a strong personal voice. His paintings often hover between abstraction and representation, characterized by dynamic forms and unconventional media. While oil on canvas remains his preferred medium, he also explores acrylics, mixed media, and unique surface treatments that enhance the expressive quality of his work.
Since the early 2000s, Aich has engaged in ongoing visual experimentation, focusing on the essential structural elements of composition without entirely abandoning representational cues. His sculptures and installations often serve as extensions of his painted works, offering viewers a multi-dimensional understanding of his artistic intent.
Aich has participated in numerous group exhibitions both in India and abroad since 1984 and has held solo shows in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Widely regarded as one of Kolkata’s leading contemporary artists, Samir Aich continues to push boundaries through his evolving artistic practice.
