Prakash Ambegaonkar

Prakash Ambegaonkar is an Indian contemporary artist and architect whose artistic practice emerged from a lifelong passion for drawing and painting. After a distinguished architectural career spanning more than four decades in the United States, Ambegaonkar returned to India and chose to devote himself entirely to painting.
His background in architecture continues to inform his approach to art, particularly his sensitivity to form, space, structure, proportion, and composition. He works across a range of mediums, including pencil, watercolor pencils, acrylic, airbrush, and digital stylus. In his digital practice, he creates his imagery independently rather than relying on photographic or ready-made source material.
Ambegaonkar's work can largely be situated within the realm of conceptual abstract expressionism.

His paintings explore the relationship between form and emotion through colour, texture, transparency, tonal variations, spaces, voids, solids, and combinations of objective and non-objective forms. Familiar subjects, such as the human face, may be fragmented and reinterpreted through abstract shapes, symbols, and visual structures.

For Ambegaonkar, a painting is fundamentally a form created by the artist on a two-dimensional surface. While emotional and psychological content is an inseparable part of his practice, he places equal importance on the integrity and visual strength of the form itself. He seeks to create works that engage the viewer visually while allowing individual associations and interpretations to emerge. Spontaneity is central to his creative process. Rather than following a predetermined visual formula, Ambegaonkar allows intuition and inner feeling to influence the development of forms and compositions.

This spontaneous process becomes a means of exploring the subconscious, transforming personal perceptions and observations into visual language.
