Sunil Kumar Vishwakarma

Sunil Kumar Vishwakarma, born in 1980, is a contemporary Indian artist whose paintings draw deeply from Indian culture, mythology and spiritual traditions. Closely connected with the visual and cultural world of Varanasi, his artistic practice transforms subjects drawn from Indian epics and mythology into contemporary compositions that explore the relationship between tradition, spirituality and everyday human experience.

Mythological narratives form an important foundation of Vishwakarma's visual vocabulary. His paintings engage with characters, stories and symbolic imagery from India's rich intangible heritage, while his use of color and composition gives these traditional subjects a contemporary presence. The spiritual atmosphere of Varanasi, with its rituals, festivals, architecture, and living traditions, forms an important cultural context for his work.

His practice has received recognition at national and international platforms. His work has been exhibited in India as well as at the China Academy of Arts in China, and he has participated in numerous exhibitions and art events across the country. His painting Ramnagar Mai Ramleela, executed in acrylic in 2018, was among the awarded works of the 60th National Exhibition of Art organized by the Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also received several honors for his contribution to contemporary Indian art.

Through his engagement with mythology, the visual culture of Varanasi and India's spiritual traditions, Sunil Kumar Vishwakarma creates paintings that connect the timeless narratives of Indian culture with contemporary visual expression.
