Sagar Kamble, born in a small village in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, is a contemporary Indian artist whose paintings draw deeply from the culture, social realities and everyday
life of his native region. Choosing Fine Arts over the more conventional path of science education, Kamble developed his artistic practice through his academic years and through encounters with artists and mentors who helped him understand his roots and translate his lived environment into a personal visual language.
His paintings frequently engage with the experiences of rural communities, with women, farmers and the social challenges faced by people in his village and neighboring regions forming an important part of his artistic concerns. Rather than treating these subjects merely as documentation, Kamble uses painting as a means of bringing emotional and social realities into public consciousness. His work has addressed issues including farmers' distress, violence against women and the long-standing social complexities surrounding the Devadasi tradition.
Kamble's artistic practice has received significant recognition across India. His achievements include awards from the Bombay Art Society, Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, Art Society of India and other major art organizations. He represented India at the Bhushan International Art Fair in South Korea in 2017 and was recognized by the Government of Maharashtra in 2019. In 2020, he received the prestigious 61st Annual Lalit Kala Akademie Award, presented by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His work continues to connect contemporary painting with the social realities, cultural memory and human stories of rural India.
