Ram Jaiswal

Ram Jaiswal is a well-known artist of India. He was born on 5th September 1937 in Sadabad, Mathura. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow. He also worked as an artist in Lucknow’s Medical College for 3 years.

Ram Jaiswal spent his early years in Lucknow and Meerut. During that time there was influence of Bengal School in the whole of India. The tradition of wash painting with mythological themes was popular at that time. His art also found Indian expression with its lyrical charm.

Ram Jaiswal is not only a painter but also has a keen interest in literature. He has published 4 story collections titled: “Asurakshit”, “Ugrah”, “Samaydansh”, “Vish-jal”.

He has also published a collection of poems titled, “Bimb-pratibimb”.

His paintings titled “Bandi” and “Viyogi” are especially noteworthy. Nature painting exemplifies his remarkable skill. He was especially skilled painting nature with Wet-on-Wet technique in watercolours. “The shores of Gomti”, “Residency” and “Ascetic Shiva” are examples of such paintings.

Radha Kamal Mukherjee, then vice-chancellor of Lucknow Vishwa Vidyalaya and Padma Shri awardee, said about Ram Jaiswal, who has been associated with the arts for about 60 years, “His works at the forefront of Indian myths and legends reveal both his literary background and the excellence of the traditional Indian style. His paintings and color reflect Indian humility and a subtle sense of rhythm.”

He has received the prestigious top award of “Kalavid” from the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi in 1997. In 1998, he was honoured with the Vishish Sahityakar Samman by the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy.
