Jhunu Sarkar (b. 1984, Kolkata) is a contemporary abstract artist based in New Delhi. Largely self-taught, her artistic practice is rooted in an intuitive exploration of colour, texture, form,
and emotion. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Sarkar builds layered compositions through the interaction of colour and movement. Her abstract works draw from nature, memory,
spirituality, human relationships, and everyday experiences, translating intangible emotions into visual expressions that remain open to interpretation.
Her artistic journey has been shaped by extensive practical experience, including two decades of working alongside artist Ranjit Sarkar. She also holds a three-year diploma from
Sarba Bharatiya Kala Parishad, Kolkata, and completed her Master's degree from Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University in 2016. Sarkar began presenting her work publicly with the group exhibition Black at Lalit Kala
Akademi, New Delhi, in 2015, followed by a solo exhibition at Lokayata Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2016. Her later solo exhibition Brishti at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in 2023, further explored her engagement with colour, abstraction, and emotional expression.
Her work has been presented across India and internationally, including at the India Art Festival, Jaipur Kala Mahotsav, and World Art Dubai. Through her practice, Sarkar approaches painting as both a process of expression and introspection, creating works in which colour becomes a language for experiences that often exist beyond words. “I don’t paint what I see. I paint what I feel and sometimes what I cannot say.”
