Vijaya Kumar Somanchi is a self-taught Indian artist whose enduring passion for art has led him through an evolving exploration of diverse artistic forms and techniques. Since developing his distinctive painting technique in 1969, he has continually refined a visual language that transforms imagination and observation into richly textured works of art.
Beginning his artistic journey with abstract painting, Somanchi gradually evolved towards surrealism before finding his signature expression in mountain landscapes. His mountainscapes combine remarkable attention to the rugged details of hills and boulders with a strong sense of depth and three-dimensionality, creating landscapes that invite viewers into an almost otherworldly experience.
His first exhibition was a group show in Guntur in 1978. He later became part of the Guntur Kala Pandavas, a collective of artists that exhibited together for nearly two decades, until 1997. Over the years, his work has been presented through numerous exhibitions, demonstrations and art programmes.
Beyond his studio practice, Somanchi has made a sustained contribution to art education and research. He guides doctoral research scholars, conducts demonstrations for artists and students, and contributes to academic art education. He has also served as an honorary jury member at NIFT Hyderabad and as visiting faculty at the Annapurna International School of Film and Media. Through his distinctive technique and evocative mountainscapes, Vijaya Kumar
Somanchi transforms nature into an imaginative visual experience, creating a space where the artist's journey and the viewer's own interpretation meet.
