Ranjit Sarkar, born in Kolkata in 1975, is a contemporary Indian artist whose paintings explore mythology, celebration, human emotion and the relationship between people and their surroundings. His artistic journey began with formal studies at Calcutta University, followed by specialized training in Indian-style painting under Prof. Samir Ghosh and a Diploma in Painting from DQ, Hyderabad.
Sarkar's paintings are characterized by dramatic representation and a continual reinterpretation of mythological and religious imagery. Rather than treating traditional characters and narratives as fixed historical subjects, he transforms them through contemporary compositions, expressive forms, and intense engagement with human emotion. His work examines the relationship between human passion and the surrounding environment, often modifying natural appearances to create heightened and emotionally charged forms of realism.
Celebration and cultural memory are recurring elements in his practice, visible in bodies of work centered around Dandiya, Ghoomar and desert celebrations. Through these subjects, Sarkar brings together Indian cultural traditions, movement, color and collective experience. His works have been presented in exhibitions and art events across New Delhi and other centers, including the India Habitat Centre and All India Fine Art and Crafts Society, establishing his practice within the contemporary Indian painting landscape.
